Hari Om Parents,
We are so overwhelmed and gratified that the essence of the Hindu
teaching, that is brought to us in story through Puranas, in
philosophical questioning through the Upanishads, and that Gurudev
brought to us all- was so honestly and purely examined by our class
last Friday.
Questions like this came from the students- so if the dream is not
real and much like that the waking also is not, is the earth real? I
experience or perceive something- that is not always true. What is the
difference between perception and truth/reality?
Is it wrong to seek success when succeeding brings me joy? What
happens in moksha- what is that Principle that stays and enlivens the
3 states, how do I recognize it? Is this Advaita?
We started class with starting prayers and meditation.
After a brief recap of the previous lesson- Covet not wealth and true
meaning of charity which lead to the grand account of Nachiketas'
questioning of his father's daanam of barren , sick and old cows as
charity, we came to his famous dialogue with Lord Yama and his gaining
knowledge from that great Teacher -Yama dharma raja or Kaalah.
We listened next to the story of Janaka and his dream- which lead him
to the famously asked question- is that true or is this true , to
which Ashtavakra's response- Neither that is true nor this is
true-(referring to the waking state and the dream state), but You who
experience both is the truth. This is the seed that sprouted so many
deep, insightful, sincere questions.
Ignorance of our Infinite, Complete,True Nature causes us to face
problems in life and how to overcome this ignorance is a large part of
the teaching of the scriptures and the realized masters.
A first step in acknowledging and removing ignorance is understanding
the difference between needs and wants which took us back to our
initial lesson on prakriti, vikrithi and samskriti Fulfilling needs in
a dharmic way, keeping wants from turning into needs requires us to
lead an alert and vigilant life.
To attach to the higher, one needs to detach from our lower tendencies
and then attaching to the higher as taught by Pujya Gurudev as
attachment detachment yoga. Many such practices such as Upasana which
we shall cover in our next class.
Our next Balavihar class is on April 16
